Kohala Waterfront Escape ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
We recently returned from our second trip to this beautiful Kohala waterfront escape and could not have spent our vacation in a better corner of Hawaii. After a week back home we are still struggling to wake up every morning without the sounds of the ocean and local birds. This is an incredible location on the Big Island and only a short drive away from several great day trips and beaches.
We enjoyed day trips up to the scenic town of Waimea for the Farmer’s Market on Saturday morning, which is a must-do if you’d like to discover all kinds of great local products and treats, and some of the best produce we found on all the island. The scenic hike to Pololu Valley is also a fun hike with some great views and leads you through the sleepy northern town of Hawi which is a fun stop for lunch and ice cream.
Located just a short drive south are the major resorts and beaches, which are fun to explore and home to some of the best beaches in the the entire country. (I’m looking at you Hapuna.) We found parking and beach days to be easily accessible. The house itself is located in a gated neighborhood so you can enjoy some peace and relaxation without having to deal with anyone else at all if you so choose.
Nothing quite beats visiting the local fishmonger down the street and picking out fresh Hawaiian snapper, mahimahi, or sushi-grade tuna to cook up with family and friends in the spacious and fully equipped kitchen.
We were able to spot Humpbacks, pilot whales, and spinner dolphins out on the water daily. A pair of binoculars and telescope made it easy to enjoy some of the best whale watching we have seen. The views of the ocean, sunsets, and stars at night make this location an ideal getaway that really helps to unwind, recharge, and revitalize the soul.
Easy guides from the owner make adapting into your new space quick and easy so you can get to enjoying the freshwater pool and hot tub faster. We are already looking forward to our next adventure here. Mahalo! ~The Ratcliff's (March 2019)
